THE NEXT AREA OF ATTENTION IS THE BACK. Start with the upper portion of the back. Bring your attention to any areas of comfort, ease, or fluidity. Now bring your attention to any tension or discomfort. There may be areas of blockages or heaviness. Observe. Notice. Do not change anything. Experience awareness from a place of equanimity. If there is a sense of pain anywhere, is it penetrating? What is its intensity? Is there a burning sensation, a shooting pain sensation, or is the pain more generalized? Is it near the surface or deep below the surface? Does the nature of the pain change as the focus of attention remains on the sensations? Is it moving, dissolving, changing in its temperature or texture? If so, how is its nature changing? Keep noting and observing, without changing anything. Keep scanning from this place of neutral observation. Continue to scan down your back with the same focus of attention. Continue to the middle of the back and onto the lower part of the back.
